Designer - Olga Osol
OLGA OSOL (born 1905 in Lappeenranta, died 1994 in Espoo) started work at Arabia as an assistant for artist Greta-Lisa Jäderholm-Snellman in 1926. Talented and enthusiastic about work, Osol got an opportunity for further education in evening classes at current Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. After establishing Arabia Art Department (1912) her task became design of new decoration models; as decoration technique was often hand painting or colour glazings.
For AX coffee dish set designed warm brown shade decal Myrna was most known decoration designed by Osol, which was on factory production in 1937-1998. She herself has told that the decoration has been modified from German decal model, as it was usual to do in Arabia in the 1930's.
Coffee cups and saucers were designed to be a better coffee dish set for countryside's modest circumstances. The most known tableware set designed by her was R model which came on market in 1941 and which had modern and sleek shapes despite the traditional structure. It was produced with different kinds of ornaments still in the 1950's. Dish set Soma and coffee set LT made of porcelain are also of Osol's design.
From war time Arabia's warehouses were left with a lot of undecorated items and a special decoration department was established for processing in 1943 of which young employees Olga Osol trained. A Department of Hand Made Decorations was an employer of graduate porcelain painters and ceramists from current Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
Until 1959 Osol managed a department of which name was changed to Department of Industrial Arts in the 1950's. She worked for Arabia until 1971, the last over ten years in the Department of Product Design.
