Designer - Kyllikki Salmenhaara

Kyllikki Salmenhaara (b. 1915 in Tyrnävä, d. 1981 in Helsinki) studied at the Central School of Art and Design in 1938 -1943 as a ceramist. In the Arabian department she worked 1974 - 1961. She worked as a lectrurer and had a teaching position abroad and as a senior teacher in ceramic department 1963 - 1981.

Besauce of her wide range expertise, she became one of the most important artist in the field of Finnish international design. Salmenhaara is especially well known for wide range of material research in the burning process. In Arabia she created unique collectables. Often her work has been from wheel-turned modules to create larger entities. Glazes are in many layers, some of which have been wiped out or handled with oxides.

Salmenhaara's ceramics relies heavily on tradition, but it also had alot of investigation and her own experimentation. Salmenhaara's works were awarded in many Milano Triennals and she was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal in 1961.
