Designer - Kaarina Aho

KAARINA AHO, (born 1925, died 1990 in Helsinki) started working for Arabia Product Design Department as an assistant for Kaj Franck in 1946. She had graduated from the Central School of Art and Design as a scetch artist, but was not happy with her assignment at Arabia working on decoration models, for tableware in mass production. Resignation was not accepted but the management of the factory sent her on a training tour to almost every factory department from laboratory to glazing.

Kaarina Aho developed into multifaceted and expert designer to Franck's working group in which she worked 1949-1962 and after that in a pottery established by herself. Her assignment in Arabia became to complete basic tableware and Kilta dish set designed by Franck. As a response to a challenge four complete dish sets were born, the most famous was Palapeli, in which franckish ideal of pure geometric tableware shape  came off the most pure as based on a cone; even the bowl set could be created as a large cone.

Kaarina Aho herself also wheel-turned and carried out diversely juicy colour glaze decorated unique utensils to her own exhibitions. Expressionlessly geometric BL model mocha cup made of porcelain designed by herself was awarded in Milano's triennal 1957 with silver.
