Designer - Dorrin von Fieandt
DORRIT VON FIENDT (born 1927 in Helsinki) started becoming acquainted with Arabia factory as a summer trainee in Industrial Art Department in 1945 and 1946. She got to know and try out principles of free designing in supervision of i.a. Friedl Kjellberg, Aune Siimes and Michael Schilkin. After graduation in 1948 she established own studio in Helsinki and continued implementation of wide ceramic production with a varying intensity until 1986 when she was invited as a visiting artist to the Art Department. Work continued over ten year as a freelancer.
Dorrit von Fieandt's designed decorations, tableware and unique basins are implemented with boldly versatile palette and colourful strong brushstrokes, in which are repeated themes of lush gardens and colourful circus life. Implementing of the work was often difficult because of the difference of high firing industrial colours and the conciseness of colour scale compared to the under glazed colours used in her earlier atelier production.
At Arabia she renewed already existing tableware models with fresh decorations and designed pystytavaraa to use with already existing laakatavara. The most important to her was co-operation with the production specialists of the whole factory whereupon decoration and tableware models were born such as hand painted Palermo, decal China Tea or bird set Riista.
